Parachute Installation - Part 1

The parachute I ordered arrived last week. I was hoping to install it sooner but the fuel boost pump work took a detour. Now that it’s solved, I spent yesterday and today to install the parachute tube and the parachute bag itself.

Rocket Tube

The rocket tube is secured onto a vertical wall in the luggage compartment via 6 AN4 bolts and a bunch of washers of various thickness.

Inserting the bolts and the rocket tube was trivial. The trick was getting the washer and nuts onto the bolt, and get the nuts started on the thread. I followed Evan’s advice using magnetic to slide the washers on. That worked fantastically. However the magnet trick did not work for getting the nuts on. The build manual shared a different trick which was using tape to hold the nut and turn it onto the bolt. This trick worked. It literally took me 30 seconds to get the last nut on once I understood this trick.

The Top Strip

There is a strip that loops around the rocket tube on the very top. However I don’t have this strip in the kit. It’s easy enough to just make one though, so that’s what I did. I cut a long strip of aluminum, and bent it roughly to the shape of the tube, then put the strip on the tube to get a more accurate shape and measurement.

After a few adjustments, I got the strip’s length and shape down. Then I drilled 2 holes for AN4 bolts to come through and secured the strip in place with AN4 bolts.

Parachute Box

Putting the parachute bag into the box required some preparation.

  • putting some plastic tubes in the box as water drain
  • wrapping the steel cables
  • Edge protector along the channel for cables to pass through
  • Cable tie on the bag to secure it inside the box

Then I put the parachute in the box, and connected the cables with a D-shackle. I also added a drop of loctite 243 on the shackle to prevent loosing from vibration.

On the back of the parachute bag, I put a bunch of zipties to attach it with the airframe to avoid chafing and reduce noise

Blowout Cover Prep

I spent the last hour of the day to clean up the blow out cover - debur, degrease, etc.

The blowout cover is supposed to have a doubler right on top of the rocket tube opening. Once again I did not have this part but it’s easy enough to fabricate one. So I cut a piece of aluminum to roughly the same shape of the tube opening, drilled 3.2mm rivet holes to match the pattern on the blowout cover and deburred everything.

I also took a look at the pull handle assembly to make a game plan for tomorrow. It looks like I need to desembly the handle to feed it through the instrument panel, and get the other end all the way through the center channel and reach the rocket tube on the back. I might have to remove the rear seat for the routing.
