Wing Mounting Prep - Rod Ends

Wing Mounting Prep - Rod Ends

TLDR

  • Installed a bunch rod ends for wing torque tubes

Details

There are many rod ends for the control surface torque tubes. I started to install them before the space becomes tight after wing attachment.

Today, I completed:

  • aileron/control stick rod end on both wings
  • bell crank rod ends on both wings
  • flap rod ends on right wing

I also discovered I am missing a set of rod ends - order placed through Sling’s builder app. I really need them to get the true location of the flap torque tube and put the locking bush in.

Aileron Rod End

Most rod ends install took ~5 to 10 minutes each. But the 2 rod ends directly under the main spar are a joy to put on. I spent 3 hours and almost broke my back to get them on.

The space to work on it was extremely small. I had to line up the bolt, multiple washers, the rod end itself, more washers, and the nut all in a perfect line. And I also had to find a creative angle to work my torque wrench on the AN4 bolt.

I came up with a trick for the washers - use contact cement (or super glue) on the washers so they stick together, and stick to the spar once inserted.

After spending hours on this, finally got both rod ends installed and torqued.
